Welcoming Sandwich High School's Class of 2020!
Have you seen us lately? At Sandwich High School/ STEM Academy, we have been very busy preparing for the arrival of the Class of 2020! As we look ahead to the 2016-2017 school year, we do so with joyful anticipation of welcoming students who have received an outstanding education at STEM Academy and bring an exciting new skill set with them as they travel to high school. Our top priority is to deliver what students and families need and want and to provide a seamless 6-year experience characterized by student engagement in rigorous and relevant teaching and learning. Our planning has focused on rigor, relevance and relationships.
Project Lead The Way
Project Lead the Way is the nation’s leading provider of STEM curriculum. It is a world class, activity, project based and problem oriented curriculum delivered through a high quality teacher professional development model and an engaged network of educators. Project Lead the Way helps students develop the skills needed to succeed in a global economy. Project Lead the Way courses are aligned with the Common Core State Standards for Math and ELA, Next Generation Science Standards. Currently, we offer Foundations of Engineering to ALL freshmen. Next year, we begin the Biomedical Pathway, Civil Engineering and Architecture. The feedback we are receiving from higher education is that colleges are eager to attract students whose sending schools are PLTW sites! Thanks to the outstanding work of Ginger Lavelle and Peter Trimble, our PLTW teachers in the STEM Academy, students arrive at SHS eager to continue the work they started! Our new freshman course in Principles of Engineering puts us on the map of innovative schools. The PLTW team has been invited to present at regional conferences and we are eager to spread the word.
PLTW is a “promising program that is both changing the lives of middle and high school students nationwide and helping to build a workforce that meets the needs of the 21st century.”- Hillary Clinton
PLTW is “[A]n exemplary program for integrating rigorous and relevant STEM curricula and professional development and improving student achievement in mathematics, science, and English language arts.”-U.S. Department of Education

Relationships
Many of our STEM students report outstanding experiences within their electives. When speaking with them about high school, they were pleased to discover that the teachers who teach electives in STEM are all available to them in high school. Here are some examples:
Melinda and Kevin Lasit have created an amazing and unifying culture which positions the choral and theater programs at the center of Blue Knight Pride! Melinda directs the STEM chorus and the high school Chorus and Sandwich Soul. She and Kevin Lasit have created an amazing 7-12 Knights Theater program! Recent auditions for Sandwich Soul and KTC indicate the enormous benefits of providing a 6 year experience in the performing arts for our talented students!
Don Franke, Legendary Model UN teacher, is teaching at STEM and at the high school. His award winning International Studies program attracts students grades 7-12. Freshmen coming from STEM ascend to leadership roles in International Studies upon their arrival at the high school.
